C Baltemore

Who Was C. Baltimore

Styled as “C. Baltemore”, Charles Calvert, third Baron Baltimore, Proprietary Governor of Maryland (1637-1715) was the first of the Lords Baltimore to rule in Maryland.  Charles witnessed many events both in England and Maryland that affected the founding, growth and threatened the survival of the colony and his family’s rule of it. Of the 6 Lords Baltimore, “C.Baltemore” was at the center and pivotal moments of Maryland’s early years and offers and interesting perspective of himself, his family and the times.

The performance is also a power point presentation that outlines Maryland’s founding as a proprietary to a royal and then back to a proprietary colony to its birth as a state. Charles Calvert engages with his audience about his grandfather, Sir George Calvert and his father Cecilius Calvert, the 2nd Lord Baltimore and founder of Maryland. “C. Baltemore” takes you on a trip trough time sharing stories and observations about his arrival in Maryland as Deputy Governor to Governor to fighting for maintaining his proprietary rights both here and back in England. During the presentation the audience gets an inside view of various aspects of life in 17th century Maryland. His Lordship also discusses his father’s legacy of Freedom of Conscience and The Act Concerning Religion of 1649. The lecture finishes with a summary discussion of the last three Lords Baltimore and the American Revolution and the transition from Maryland the colony to Maryland the state.
